EN 71-1
Mechanical and physical safety
Small parts, sharp edges and points, pull strength of attached components, and the torque needed to detach them. Applied to every toy and to any non-toy item with an attached part.
Safety first
Every safety claim on this site is reviewed by a practising paediatrician before it publishes. Nothing goes live on our word alone — and we'd be suspicious of a retailer who said otherwise.
The standards
Six standards cover almost everything that matters in this category. Here is what each one actually checks.
Mechanical and physical safety
Small parts, sharp edges and points, pull strength of attached components, and the torque needed to detach them. Applied to every toy and to any non-toy item with an attached part.
Flammability
Rate of flame spread across a product's surface. Relevant to soft toys, fabric-covered items and anything used near a heat source.
Migration of certain elements
What transfers out of a material when a child mouths it — nineteen elements including lead, cadmium, chromium and barium. The single most important standard for anything a baby will chew, which is everything.
Cords and drawstrings on children's clothing
No functional or decorative cords in the hood or neck area of any garment for children under 14. Non-negotiable, whatever the styling reason.
Harmful substances in textiles
The strictest of the four OEKO-TEX classes, intended for products in prolonged contact with a baby's skin. Covers dyes, finishes and manufacturing residues.
Organic fibre, processing and social criteria
The full chain: certified organic fibre, restricted processing chemistry, and social criteria for the facility. We publish the certificate number, which is publicly searchable.

Common questions
No amount of testing replaces supervision. Always follow the age guidance and instructions supplied with a product, and stay with your child during use — particularly for anything involving sleep, water or small components. Safety information on this site is general guidance, not medical advice. If you have a concern about your child's health or development, speak to a paediatrician.
